Hurricane Andrew devastated Palmetto Bay and the neighboring South Miami-Dade region in August 1992. Many of Palmetto Bay's houses and businesses were damaged. The neighborhood has gradually been restored throughout the years. The new residences and buildings were built with concrete walls, unlike the demolished ones, which were composed of wood frame construction.
