Hialeah, Florida

Hialeah is a major city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and is the 6th largest city in the state with a population of close to 230,000 people. The city’s name comes from the Muskogee tribe and means pretty prairie or in Seminole means upland prairie. Hialeah was presumably given this name due to its location on the prairie landmass between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades Nation Park.

In 1921, the founders of this area paid special attention to this prairie land and found it a great area to develop. During the early part of that decade, Hialeah made significant impacts on the entertainment industry with the establishment of Jai-lai, greyhound racing, Hialeah Park Racetrack, and movie production. A hurricane came through the area in 1926 impacting this entertainment boom.

In the mid-1920s, Hialeah’s population was a mere 1,500. Today the population is close to a quarter of one million. This makes this city one of the fastest-growing in the state.

Hialeah, nicknamed "The City of Progress" by many, has traditionally been home to a large number of Cuban exiles. Several monuments and parks across the city honor leaders and heroes who have shaped the culture of its inhabitants. Hialeah's friendly immigrant community today includes Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, and other Hispanic groups, making the city culturally varied and vibrant.

Hialeah is an important commercial area in Miami Dade County, home to several large retailers and a large number of local businesses. The area is also home to several new and upcoming electronic and technology businesses. Also, the second biggest Spanish television network in the nation has its headquarters in Hialeah.

Residents can participate in a variety of low-cost or free recreation and education activities. Residents have access to a library system with one main library and five branch libraries, as well as an Education and Community Services Department that provides after-school and camp programs, as well as Hialeah Reads, a city-wide reading project. Four adult centers, each with a daily lunch program, provide a diverse range of activities for older citizens.

The City's adult therapeutic recreation facility and day program are open to adults with developmental impairments. The Parks and Recreation Department operates 15 staffed parks, seven pools, two tennis facilities, sports leagues, a cultural arts theater, and a youth Early Prevention and Intervention program.

The City of Hialeah provides a diverse selection of free cultural activities, programs, and events that appeal to citizens of all backgrounds, improving communal life in the city. The Art on Palm Festival, Eggstravaganza, the Independence Day Celebration, and Santa's Snowblast are just a few of Hialeah's yearly city-wide festivities.
