The state of Florida requires all registered vehicles to have $10,000.00 in personal injury protection (PIP) coverage also known as no fault insurance. Personal injury protection insurance protects the driver/owner of a vehicle in an accident no matter who is at fault. It also protects children in the vehicle and anyone who does not have a PIP policy of their own who is in the car at the time of an accident. This coverage is for medical benefits and loss wages.

Florida also requires that taxis registered in the state have a minimum coverage of $125,000 for bodily injury insurance for each person and $250,000 for each accident. These taxis must also maintain $50,000 property damage coverage. This means that any one person, when injured by or in a taxi cab who was at fault, has a maximum of $125,000.00 in liability insurance available to them. If more than one person is injured in or by a taxi cab at fault, then there is a maximum of $250,000.00 of insurance available in total.

How the PIP/ No-Fault Insurance Works

If you are a passenger in an accident with a taxi cab, the taxi cab company's No-Fault coverage is completely responsible for the payment of your medical bills and loss wages of up to $10,000.00 if you are not covered under another PIP policy. The medical providers you treat with for your injuries will need to have the name of the insurance for billing for their services, along with any policy information you can obtain. This information will be contained in the police report that is completed at the scene of the accident. It is therefore very important to contact the police if you have been involved in a taxi cab accident, despite any other direction the taxi driver may attempt to give you.

Keep in mind that PIP/No-Fault Insurance coverage does not cover the non-economic losses such as pain, suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, or wrongful death. It also does not cover any damages in excess of $10,000.00, which includes medical bills and loss wages. These you will need to seek under the liability portion of the insurance policy of the at fault driver/individual.
