Cutler Bay, Florida

Cutler Bay is the area of Miami Dade County that was formerly Cutler Ridge. In the year 2020 census Cutler Ridge had a total population of close to 45,000.

The boundaries were set as 25°34′50′′N 80°20′48′′W, spanning from SW 184th Street (Eureka Dr) east of US 1 to the ocean and north of Black Point Marina. The northeast portion of Biscayne National Park, regions formerly known as Cutler Ridge to the west, and the neighborhood and former CDP of Lakes by the Bay to the east, are all within the town's limits.

Hurricane Andrew made landfall at Cutler Ridge in 1992. In the area, the storm inflicted "almost total destruction." The thick vegetation along the coast and the dense subdivision development in the region is considered to have reduced the number of places damaged by Andrew's flood devastation. However, virtually every building sustained severe wind damage, and the damage in Florida was estimated to be $25 billion, making it the most expensive natural disaster in US history up to that date.

The Cutler Bay Steering Committee company convened in May 2002 to explore the creation of a municipal advisory committee to advise on the incorporation of the Cutler Ridge region into the city of Cutler Ridge. The decision to incorporate was influenced in part by the recovery operations following Hurricane Andrew. On the north, Southwest 184th Street, and on the south, Southwest 216th and 224th streets were proposed incorporation borders. Furthermore, the Turnpike, U.S. 1, and Southwest 112th Avenue would form the west boundary, while Biscayne Bay would form the east boundary.

In April 2005, members of the Charter Committee considered over a dozen names for the city, ranging from Pine Ridge and Cutler Bay to just Cutler. They narrowed it down to Cutler Ridge and Old Cutler Bay. By a margin of 1,920 to 1,403, voters adopted the charter and chose the name Cutler Bay over Cutler Ridge for the county's 35th municipality in November 2005.

In the month after the name change, many residents born and raised in the Cutler Ridge region, which had been known as Cutler Ridge since the 1870s, refused to accept the new town name of Cutler Bay. The following year, the first mayor was elected, who passed away on vacation out of the country, leaving the Vice Mayor to succeed him.

Cutler Bay is also home to the newly renamed Southland Mall, which was formerly Cutler Ridge Mall.
